Training individuals to be more aware of their eating habits and the emotions associated with them can lead to significant improvements in their ability to identify and describe emotions, as well as their sense of self. This user-centred design research insight is drawn from a 2023 study published in Academic Publication. Using Semi-experimental pre-test, post-test, and follow-up with a control group. with 30 participants, researchers explored how this design variable affects real-world outcomes. The key design takeaway: Incorporate principles of mindfulness and emotional awareness into the design of products and services related to food, health, and well-being.

01

Key Findings

  • 01Significant improvement in difficulty identifying emotions in the experimental group compared to the control group.
  • 02Significant improvement in difficulty describing emotions in the experimental group compared to the control group.
  • 03Significant improvements in various aspects of self-differentiation (e.g., emotional reaction, my position, cut emotional, mixing with others) in the experimental group compared to the control group.
02

Application

Design takeaway

Incorporate principles of mindfulness and emotional awareness into the design of products and services related to food, health, and well-being.

How to apply

When designing health or wellness applications, consider integrating modules that guide users in mindful eating and emotional reflection.

Project actions

  • 01Consider how users emotionally connect with products or services.
  • 02Explore how design can facilitate self-reflection and emotional regulation.
03

Method & Evidence

AimTo investigate the effectiveness of eating-based mindfulness training on alexithymia (difficulty identifying and describing emotions) and self-differentiation in overweight women.
MethodSemi-experimental pre-test, post-test, and follow-up with a control group.
ProcedureAn experimental group of 15 overweight women received 8 weekly 90-minute sessions of eating-based mindfulness training, while a control group of 15 overweight women received no intervention. Both groups were assessed before the intervention, immediately after, and at a follow-up period using questionnaires for alexithymia and self-differentiation.
Sample30 participants
ContextPsychological well-being and eating behaviours of overweight women.

Variables

IVEating-based mindfulness training.
DVAlexithymia (difficulty identifying and describing emotions) and self-differentiation.
CVControl group receiving no intervention; participants were all overweight women.
04

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • +Inclusion of a control group provides a baseline for comparison.
  • +Use of established psychological questionnaires for measurement.

Limitations

The sample size is relatively small, and the study was conducted in a specific cultural context, which might affect the applicability of the findings elsewhere.

Reliability & validity

The use of established questionnaires and a control group enhances the reliability and validity of the findings. However, the semi-experimental design and specific sample limit generalizability.

Think critically

How might the cultural context of Iran have influenced the effectiveness of this mindfulness training, and how could this intervention be adapted for different cultural settings?

05

Design Principles

"Design interventions that foster self-awareness and emotional regulation through mindful engagement with everyday activities."

This research highlights the psychological impact of eating behaviours and offers a practical, user-centred approach to address emotional challenges. Designers and product developers can leverage these insights to create interventions or products that support emotional well-being and self-awareness, particularly for users struggling with weight management or emotional eating.

06

What This Means for Your Design

Learning to pay attention to how you eat and the feelings around it can help people who are overweight to better understand and express their emotions, and feel more like themselves.

How to use in your project

  • 1.Reference this study when exploring user psychology and emotional responses to design interventions.
  • 2.Use findings to justify the inclusion of mindfulness or emotional awareness features in a design project.

Quick Cite

Paragraph starter

This research demonstrates that targeted interventions, such as eating-based mindfulness training, can significantly improve psychological outcomes like emotional identification and self-differentiation in specific user groups. This suggests that design projects aiming to support user well-being should consider incorporating elements that foster self-awareness and emotional regulation.
