01

Key Findings

  • 01The use of popular songs as authentic material was motivating to learners.
  • 02The karaoke activity as an authentic environment was motivating to learners.
  • 03Both popular songs and karaoke were perceived as valuable by learners.
02

Application

Design takeaway

Incorporate popular music and interactive, authentic activities into learning design to increase user motivation and perceived value.

How to apply

When designing educational tools or curricula, consider integrating popular media and interactive, real-world simulation elements to make learning more appealing and effective.

Project actions

  • 01Consider how popular culture can be integrated into your design project to increase user engagement.
  • 02Explore how interactive environments can be simulated or incorporated to make learning or task completion more effective.
03

Method & Evidence

AimTo investigate whether using popular songs and karaoke as authentic materials and environments improves learners' motivation and perceived value in English as a foreign language learning.
MethodQuasi-experimental study with qualitative elements.
ProcedureTwo intact college classes were assigned to either English or Chinese discussion/writing groups. Within each class, ten collaborative teams were formed. Each team selected a popular English song to teach to the class, utilizing its lyrics for listening, reading, speaking, and writing practice through a karaoke activity. Motivation and perceived value were assessed.
Sample97 college students
ContextEnglish as a foreign language learning in a university setting in Taipei.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • +Investigated the impact of authentic materials and environments.
  • +Examined both motivation and perceived value.

Limitations

The specific popular songs and karaoke technology used might influence results. The study did not control for individual students' pre-existing musical preferences or karaoke experience.

Reliability & validity

The use of intact classes might introduce pre-existing differences between groups, potentially affecting internal validity. The study relies on self-reported motivation and perceived value, which could be subject to social desirability bias. Reliability of motivation and value measures would need to be established.

Think critically

How might the specific choice of popular songs or the design of the karaoke interface impact the effectiveness of this learning approach?
