While Generation Z possesses strong foundational sustainability drivers and intentions, social media influence can paradoxically weaken the translation of these intentions into actual conscious consumption behaviors. This innovation & markets research insight is drawn from a 2025 study published in Journal of Cultural Analysis and Social Change. Using Quantitative research using structural equation modelling (sem). with 436 participants, researchers explored how this design variable affects real-world outcomes. The key design takeaway: When designing for Generation Z, acknowledge that their digital environment can create a disconnect between their stated sustainable intentions and their purchasing decisions; design interventions that reinforce and facilitate the translation of intent into action.

Social Media Negatively Moderates Gen Z's Green Intentions into Action

While Generation Z possesses strong foundational sustainability drivers and intentions, social media influence can paradoxically weaken the translation of these intentions into actual conscious consumption behaviors.

Journal of Cultural Analysis and Social Change · 2025

01

Key Findings

  • 01Foundational sustainability drivers significantly influence green behavioral intention.
  • 02Green behavioral intention strongly impacts green behavioral outcomes.
  • 03Social media influence negatively and significantly moderates the relationship between green behavioral intention and conscious consumption.
02

Application

Design takeaway

When designing for Generation Z, acknowledge that their digital environment can create a disconnect between their stated sustainable intentions and their purchasing decisions; design interventions that reinforce and facilitate the translation of intent into action.

How to apply

When developing sustainable products or campaigns for Gen Z, consider creating tangible, easily accessible pathways for purchase or adoption that bypass potential digital distractions or conflicting messages. For example, offer clear, simple choices or highlight immediate, tangible benefits.

Project actions

  • 01When researching consumer behavior, consider how digital platforms might influence decisions.
  • 02Explore the gap between stated intentions and actual actions in your design project.
03

Method & Evidence

AimTo investigate the factors influencing Generation Z's sustainability mindset, specifically how foundational drivers impact green behavioral intentions and conscious consumption, and the moderating role of social media influence.
MethodQuantitative research using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM).
ProcedureA hierarchical conceptual model was developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Value-Belief-Norm (VBN) framework. This model included environmental knowledge, sustainability values, and eco-attitudes as first-order reflective constructs, feeding into foundational sustainability drivers. Green behavioral intention acted as a mediator, leading to conscious consumption (modeled as a second-order formative construct with dimensions of conscious consumption behavior, environmental responsibility, and willingness to act). The moderating effect of social media influence on the relationship between green behavioral intention and conscious consumption was also tested using a structured questionnaire.

Variables

IVFoundational Sustainability Drivers (Environmental Knowledge, Sustainability Values, Eco-Attitudes)
DVConscious Consumption (Conscious Consumption Behaviour, Environmental Responsibility, Willingness to Act)
CVSocial Media Influence (as a moderator)

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • +Utilizes a robust statistical methodology (SEM) to model complex relationships.
  • +Integrates established theoretical frameworks (TPB, VBN) for a comprehensive analysis.

Limitations

This study focused on Generation Z; results might differ for older or younger age groups. The specific nature of social media's negative influence requires more detailed exploration.

Reliability & validity

The study employed Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with a validated questionnaire, suggesting good internal consistency and construct validity. The large sample size enhances external validity.

Think critically

How can designers create products or experiences that actively counteract the potentially negative moderating effects of social media on sustainable consumption intentions?

05

Design Principles

"Design for behavioral translation: Ensure that design solutions actively support and enable users to enact their stated intentions, particularly in contexts where external influences might create friction."

Understanding this dynamic is crucial for businesses and policymakers aiming to foster genuine sustainable practices. It suggests that marketing and educational efforts need to go beyond simply raising awareness and actively address the potential disjuncture between expressed intent and realized behavior, especially within digitally-saturated environments.

06

What This Means for Your Design

Even though young people care about the environment and want to buy sustainable products, what they see on social media can sometimes make it harder for them to actually do it.

How to use in your project

  • 1.Use this research to justify investigating the influence of digital media on user behavior in your design project.
  • 2.Cite this study when discussing the challenges of translating user intentions into desired actions.

Paragraph starter

Research indicates that while Generation Z exhibits strong environmental intentions, social media influence can negatively moderate the translation of these intentions into conscious consumption behaviors. This suggests that design interventions aimed at promoting sustainability must actively address the digital environment's potential to create a disjuncture between stated values and actual purchasing decisions.
